Pledge of Mutual Respect

To celebrate the Millennium, Bridge Builders presented the City of Anchorage with a “Pledge of Mutual Respect.” Paul Davis, board president, came up with the idea as a way to explain the prupose of Bridge Builders and to advance our mission in the community.

A committee was tasked with writing the pledge. On the committee were representatives from 16 different cultures. Everyone on the committee wrote his or her own “pledge.” A Drafting Committee combined the best words and phrases into the final 60-word pledge. Here it is:

"We the people of Anchorage, Alaska, pledge to respect one another, celebrating the differences that make us unique: our customs, spiritual beliefs, cultures, colors, dreams and ancestral traditions. Standing together, hand in hand, young and old, we affirm that through mutual respect we can build a stronger more harmonious community, a more unified nation and a better, safer world."

The Anchorage School Board was inspired by this initiative and placed copies of "The Pledge" in every Anchorage classroom. It was also recited at the All America Cities competition in Kansas City in 2002. This pledge is a constant reminder of our vision that Anchorage can become, "the first city without prejudice."
